This is a new community space in the Oku-Kambayashi district of Ayabe City that can be used and interacted with by a variety of people, especially local residents. In addition to being used as a place for the local community to relax, the space also offers lunch and coffee for sale in the coffee shop, as well as the use of the kitchen and building space for events.
A place that used to be a common sight in the past, a place that was slightly open, where people from inside and outside the community who knew each other well could come and go as they pleased. A place where people could drop by and have casual conversations, and where new things could be born through such interactions. As was the case with the home’s veranda-like engawa and community center, we believe that semi-public spaces serve as a link between the outside and the inside of the house to nurture the local community.
Niohmon, main gate to Komyoji Temple and a national treasure, is located on Mt. Kimio at Komyoji Temple, and the Nioh, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, have been watching over the history of the Oku-Kambayashi area for more than 700 years. Shimakikai Co., Ltd. has named its new project "Nioh no Sumika" with the hope that it will become a "sumika” (or dwelling) for both the Nioh and all local residents.
The concept is ‘a shared space in the community where you can casually drop by.’People want to relax, talk with someone, or ask for help with problems.People have different ways they spend their time. It doesn't matter if there’s no purpose to a visit.
We aim to create a space where people can share the same place and time, create opportunities for people to connect with each other, and create new things through interaction, and create a new community place that generates exchange within and outside the community.
